Urs Toni Bühler was born on July 19, 1971, in Switzerland. He is a talented singer known for his powerful tenor voice. A tenor is a male singer with a high vocal range. Urs is a key member of the famous music group Il Divo. This group mixes classical music with pop songs, a style called classical crossover. Il Divo has sold more than 30 million albums around the world!

Early Life and Music

Urs Bühler started his musical journey very young. When he was just five years old, he began singing in a choir. He also learned to play many instruments, including the violin, clarinet, piano, guitar, and drums.

His music career took a different turn when he was 15. He joined a cover band, which played songs by other artists. Later, at 17, he became the lead singer of a heavy metal band called "Conspiracy" in Luzern, Switzerland. This was quite different from the classical music he would later become famous for!

Music Career

Becoming a Tenor

Even while singing in a heavy metal band, Urs was taking music lessons. He studied at the Academy for School and Church Music. His love for classical singing grew, so he moved to Amsterdam. There, he studied voice at the Sweelinck Conservatorium.

He also had special lessons from famous tenors like Gösta Winbergh and Christian Papis. These teachers helped him learn many classical songs. Before joining Il Divo, Urs often sang in the choir of the Dutch opera. He also performed at the famous Salzburg Festival.

Joining Il Divo

In December 2003, Urs Bühler became part of a new international music group called Il Divo. The other members were Carlos Marín from Spain, Sébastien Izambard from France, and David Miller from the United States.

The group's creator, Simon Cowell, met Urs for an audition. Simon simply asked Urs to sing without any music. Urs's amazing tenor voice impressed Simon, and he offered him a spot in Il Divo.

Their first album, Il Divo, came out in November 2004. It quickly became a huge success worldwide. The album sold five million copies in less than a year. It even reached number four on the US Billboard charts.

Il Divo continued to release popular albums:

  • Ancora was released in November 2005.
  • Siempre came out in November 2006.
  • The Promise was released in November 2008. This album went straight to number one in the UK!
