Ursina is a small town called a borough in Somerset County, Pennsylvania, United States. It's part of the wider Johnstown area. In 2020, about 244 people lived there.
History of Ursina
Ursina got its name from Judge William J. Baer. He owned the land when the town was first planned in 1868. The word "bear" in Latin is "Ursus," which is where Ursina comes from.
In 1868, Judge Baer had a blacksmith shop and a sawmill built. Ephraim Kreger built the very first house in Ursina. Isaac A. Jenkins opened the first store that same year. A school was built in 1870, and John Griffith was the first teacher. Ursina officially became a borough in 1872.
A railroad line, called the Ursina Branch Railroad, was built between 1871 and 1872. It helped transport coal from the area. However, this four-mile train line only ran for about three years. It stopped working because of money problems across the country in the 1870s.
Geography and Climate
Ursina is located in Pennsylvania at coordinates 39°49′0″N 79°19′52″W / 39.81667°N 79.33111°W. The borough covers about 0.7 square miles (1.8 square kilometers) of land. It is surrounded by Lower Turkeyfoot Township. The town of Confluence is located to its west.
