Uruti is a small place located in northern Taranaki, on the North Island of New Zealand. You can find it along State Highway 3. It's north-east of Mimi and south-west of Ahititi. The Uruti Stream joins the Mimi River right here. This river then flows out to the North Taranaki Bight.

A Glimpse into Uruti's History

Uruti has a special place in New Zealand's history. In 1909, the country's very first district nursing service started here. A nurse was appointed to help people living in the more remote parts of the Uruti Valley. This was a big step in providing healthcare to everyone.

The Uruti Tunnel

The Uruti tunnel is an important link for the area. It connects the Uruti Valley to the main highway. This tunnel was finished in 1923. It's known for being the longest tunnel in Taranaki.

Uruti on the Big Screen

Did you know Uruti has been featured in movies? The 1984 film Vigil was filmed right here. Also, a lot of the 2003 movie The Last Samurai was filmed in the Uruti Valley. In that film, Mount Taranaki/Egmont was used to look like Mount Fuji!
