Ustlawn (pronounced "Ust-lawn"), also known by its traditional Squamish name Eslhá7an (pronounced "Es-lah-han"), is a vibrant village community. It is located right on the beautiful shores of North Vancouver, in what is now British Columbia, Canada. The name Eslhá7an means "head bay" in the Squamish language. This name describes how the bay used to reach far into the Burrard Inlet.

What is Ustlawn?

Ustlawn is a significant place for the Squamish people, who are the original inhabitants of this land. It has been a central village for a very long time, even dating back to when the first missionaries arrived in British Columbia.

A Place of History and Faith

One of the most important landmarks in Ustlawn is the St. Paul's Catholic Church. This church is not just any building; it is the oldest church still standing in British Columbia! Because of its long history and importance, it has been recognized as a National Historic Site of Canada. This means it's a special place that helps tell the story of Canada's past.

Modern Community Hub

Today, Ustlawn is a busy community with several important centers that help its residents. These include:

  • The Eslha7an Training Center, which helps people learn new skills.
  • The Stitsma Employment Center, which supports people in finding jobs.
  • The So-Sah-Latch Health and Family Centre, which provides health care and family support.

Right on the water's edge of the village, you'll also find the Mosquito Creek Marina, a place where boats can dock. The official name for the land Ustlawn is on is Mission Indian Reserve No. 1. This reserve is a designated area of land for the Squamish Nation.
