List of Squamish villages facts for kids
The Squamish are an Indigenous group who have lived in what is now British Columbia, Canada, for a very long time. Their original home was around a beautiful area called Howe Sound.
Around the year 1800, the Squamish people were invited to share another area called Burrard Inlet. This invitation came from the Tsleil-waututh people. Sadly, many Tsleil-waututh people had gotten sick, and their population had become much smaller. So, the Squamish moved into this new area, which meant their land now overlapped with the Musqueam people.
Before this, the main home of the Squamish was the lowlands and river mouths of the Squamish River and other streams at the top of Howe Sound. Their territory reached all the way to Green Lake near today's Whistler. Beyond that was the land of the Lil'wat people. The islands in Howe Sound and the western coast of Howe Sound, stretching south to Gibsons, are also part of Squamish territory.
