Uvis Helmanis (born June 10, 1972) is a famous Latvian basketball player who used to play as a power forward. After he stopped playing, he became a basketball coach. Currently, he works as an assistant coach for Alvark Tokyo.

Uvis Helmanis: A Basketball Star

Uvis Helmanis was a very important player for the Latvian National Team for many years. He was known for being strong and experienced on the court. Standing at 2.04 meters (about 6 feet 8.5 inches) tall, he could play close to the basket. However, he was also great at shooting from further away.

Playing Style and Skills

Helmanis used his size well, especially when playing defense. But his best skill was his ability to make three-point shots. Even though he didn't look super fast, he was very good at finding open spots behind the three-point line to shoot.

National Champion Achievements

Uvis Helmanis won national championships in three different countries during his career:

  • Latvia
  • Poland
  • Germany

After playing for four successful years with the team in Bamberg, Germany, Helmanis returned to Latvia. He joined BK Ventspils, a well-known team, and showed off his skills in the Baltic League and ULEB Cup games. He was not the loudest leader, but he was a key part of his team.

EuroBasket History

In the summer of 2009, Uvis Helmanis made history. He became the first Latvian player ever to play in six different EuroBasket tournaments. This is a huge achievement in European basketball!

From Player to Coach

After a long and successful playing career, Uvis Helmanis decided to become a basketball coach.

Starting His Coaching Journey

In 2010, after winning the Latvian Championship with Barons LMT, he retired as a player. He immediately became the head coach for the same team. Later, he moved to Poland to work as an assistant coach for Czarni Słupsk.

Coaching in Latvia and Beyond

After one season in Poland, Uvis came back to Latvia. He joined the coaching staff of BC VEF Rīga as an assistant coach. In 2013, he became the head coach for BK Liepājas Lauvas. He has continued to coach different teams, including:

  • Valmiera/ORDO
  • BK Ogre (assistant coach)
