VaShawn Mitchell, born on November 19, 1976, is an American gospel singer. He also writes songs. VaShawn has won many awards for his music. He has also created songs for other famous singers like Vanessa Bell Armstrong and Smokie Norful.

Early Life

VaShawn grew up in Harvey, Illinois. He went to Thornton High School. Later, he studied psychology in college.

Music Career

VaShawn started his music journey with Lonnie Hunter. He worked at St. Mark Baptist Church. When he was 20, Bishop Larry Trotter noticed his talent. VaShawn became the Minister of Music at Sweet Holy Spirit Church in Chicago.

As the Minister of Music, he managed the whole music department. He created popular songs like Don't Last and My Worship Is For Real. VaShawn also released his first solo album, So Satisfied.

VaShawn is a talented songwriter. He has written hit songs for Smokie Norful, Vanessa Bell Armstrong, and Bishop Paul Morton. He also leads worship services. Over the years, he has written many best-selling choir songs. These include My Worship Is For Real and Trouble Don't Last.

In 2012, VaShawn started a group called the Norman Youth and Arts Foundation. He named it after his grandfather. This foundation helps young people. It holds summer camps for arts in the Chicago area. VaShawn also works with the Big Brothers and Big Sisters Foundation. He helps as a spokesperson.

On December 31, 2016, VaShawn Mitchell got a new role. He became the General Overseer of Music & Worship Arts. This was at Mount Zion Baptist Church in Nashville, Tennessee.

Awards and Honors

VaShawn Mitchell's song, "Nobody Greater," was very popular. It was the most played gospel song in 2011. It stayed on Billboard's Gospel songs chart for nine weeks.

VaShawn received many nominations at the 27th Annual Stellar Awards. He was nominated for 11 awards. He won 6 of them!

He was also nominated for two Grammy Awards. This was at the 53rd Annual Grammy Awards. "Nobody Greater" was nominated for Best Gospel Performance. His album Triumphant was nominated for Best Contemporary R&B Gospel Album.

The Gospel Music Association's Dove Awards also recognized Triumphant. The album and the song "Nobody Greater" both received nominations.

VaShawn's hometown of Harvey, Illinois, honored him. They named a street in his neighborhood "VaShawn Mitchell Street."

VaShawn is an honorary member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc.. He joined them in 2022.

His recent song, "Turning Around For Me," was also a hit. It came from his album Created 4 This. The song reached the top 5 on the Gospel albums chart. It also made it to the R&B Top 25.

In 2013, VaShawn was a judge. He judged the popular choir competition "How Sweet The Sound."
