Vadim Petrov (born May 24, 1932 – died December 7, 2020) was a famous Czech composer. He had both Russian and Czech family roots. He wrote many different kinds of music, from classical pieces to popular songs and music for movies and TV shows.
About Vadim Petrov
Vadim Petrov was a talented pianist and composer. He came from a family with Russian roots who lived in Prague, Czech Republic. His family had a doctor who was originally from a noble Russian family.
From a young age, Vadim loved music. He went to a Russian high school in Prague. While there, he also took piano lessons with Berta Kabeláčová. He learned about music theory and how to compose from Miloslav Kabeláč.
Later, from 1952 to 1956, he studied at the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague. His teacher there was Jaroslav Řídký. For his graduation, he composed a large piece of music called The Vítkov Hill. This piece was inspired by an important battle that happened near Prague in 1420.
After his studies, Vadim Petrov worked at the Prague Municipal Education Centre. He was in charge of the Folk Entertainment department. In the 1960s, he started a special school for dance music and jazz. This school is now known as the Jaroslav Ježek Conservatory and College. He was its first director.
Teaching and Later Work
In 1968, after some political changes in Czechoslovakia, his artistic work faced difficulties. However, he found a way to continue teaching. He became a professor at the Jan Deyl Conservatory and Secondary School for Visually Impaired.
Later, from 1976 to 1992, he taught music theory and composition at the Prague Conservatory. He also led the administrative board of Dilia, an international agency that helps protect copyrights for artists.
Vadim Petrov was a very productive composer. He created almost 1300 musical works! In 2003, he received the Gold and Platinum Disc awards from Supraphon, a record company. He mostly focused on music for plays, movies, radio, and television. He also wrote classical orchestral pieces, chamber music (for small groups of instruments), choral works, songs, and music for poetry readings.
His granddaughter is the model Linda Vojtová.
