History
Vado was started in 1920 by Francis “Frank” Marion Boyer and his wife Ella Louise. They had previously founded another community called Blackdom, New Mexico. However, Blackdom became a ghost town (an empty town) because they had problems getting enough water from their wells. So, they moved and created Vado.
Geography
Vado is located in the southeastern part of Doña Ana County. It sits in a flat area called the Mesilla Valley, right next to the Rio Grande river on its east side. The main highway, Interstate 10, runs along the eastern edge of Vado. You can get to Vado from Exit 155 on I-10.
If you drive north on Interstate 10, it's about 17 miles (27 km) to Las Cruces. Las Cruces is the main city and the county seat (where the county government is located) for Doña Ana County. If you drive south on I-10, it's about 32 miles (51 km) to El Paso, Texas.
