Vahagn Garniki Khachaturyan is an Armenian economist and politician. He is the fifth and current president of Armenia. He took office in March 2022.
Before becoming president, he served in other important roles. He was the mayor of Yerevan, the capital city, from 1992 to 1996. He also worked as the Minister of High-Tech Industry from 2021 to 2022.

About Vahagn Khachaturyan
Early Life and Education
Vahagn Khachaturyan was born in 1959 in a town called Sisian. He studied economics at the Yerevan Institute of National Economy. He graduated in 1980.
After college, he served in the Soviet Army for two years. For the next ten years, he taught at the Yerevan Institute. He also worked as an economist at a company called HrazdanMash. Later, he became a deputy general director at the Mars Factory.
Family Life
Vahagn Khachaturyan is married to Anahit Minasyan. They have two children together. Besides his native Armenian, he can also speak Russian and English.
Political Journey
Early Political Roles
Mr. Khachaturyan started his political career in the Yerevan City Council. He was a member from 1990 to 1996. During this time, he also served as the Mayor of Yerevan. This means he was in charge of the city's government.
From 1995 to 1999, he was a deputy in the National Assembly of Armenia. This is like being a member of parliament. He also advised President Levon Ter-Petrosyan from 1996 to 1998.
Becoming a Minister
In 2002, he became the Vice President of a center that studied politics, law, and economics. Later, in 2021, he was appointed as the Minister of High-Tech Industry. In this role, he helped develop technology and innovation in Armenia.
Presidency
In January 2022, the previous president, Armen Sarkissian, resigned. The ruling political party, Civil Contract Party, chose Vahagn Khachaturyan as their candidate for president.
The Armenian parliament elected him president in March 2022. He officially started his term on March 13, 2022.

As president, he represents Armenia on the world stage. For example, in June 2022, he visited the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum in Russia. This forum is a big meeting where leaders discuss economic issues.
Other Activities
- In 2000, he helped start the ARMAT Center for Democracy and Civil Society Development.
- In 2006, he was a founding member of "Aylyntrank," a group for social and political ideas.
- From 2019 to 2021, he was a member of the Board of Armeconombank.
