Vahagn Garniki Khachaturyan (Armenian: Վահագն Գառնիկի Խաչատուրյան; born 22 April 1959) is an Armenian politician. He is the 5th and current president of Armenia. Before becoming president, he served as the Mayor of Yerevan from 1992 to 1996. He was also the Minister of High-Tech Industry from 2021 to 2022. He was a member of the Armenian National Congress for a time but is now an independent politician.

About Vahagn Khachaturyan
His Early Life
Vahagn Khachaturyan was born in 1959 in a town called Sisian. He is married and has two children. Besides speaking his native Armenian, he also knows English and Russian.
Education and First Jobs
Mr. Khachaturyan studied economics at the Yerevan Institute of National Economy. He graduated in 1980. After his studies, he served in the Soviet Army from 1980 to 1982. For the next ten years, he taught at the Yerevan Institute. He also worked as an economist at a company called HrazdanMash. Later, he became the deputy general director at the Mars Factory until 1992.
His Political Journey
Becoming Mayor and Parliament Member
Vahagn Khachaturyan started his political career in 1990. He was a member of the Yerevan City Council until 1996. From 1992 to 1996, he served as the Mayor of Yerevan, the capital city. He was also a member of the National Assembly of Armenia (Armenia's parliament) from 1995 to 1999. From 1996 to 1998, he worked as an adviser to Armenia's President, Levon Ter-Petrosyan. In August 2021, he was appointed Minister of High-Tech Industry.
Becoming President of Armenia
In January 2022, the previous President of Armenia, Armen Sarkissian, resigned. The ruling Civil Contract Party then suggested Vahagn Khachaturyan for the presidency. He was elected president by the Armenian parliament in the second round of voting. He officially became president on March 13, 2022.
As president, he meets with leaders from other countries. For example, in June 2022, he visited the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum in Russia.
