Early Life and Education
Valérie Massonneau was born in Angers, France. She was the fifth of six children in her family. Her father, Jean-Noël Massonneau, lost a leg in a landmine accident during the Second World War when he was young. He passed away when Valérie was 21 years old. After her father's death, her mother worked at the front desk of the Angers ice rink.
Valérie studied history and political science. She earned a specialized master's degree in political science from the University of Paris 1 Pantheon-Sorbonne.
Journalism Career
In 2005, Trierweiler started hosting shows about politics on the Direct 8 television channel. She often interviewed important people. She hosted a weekly political show called Le Grand 8 until 2007. Later, she co-hosted another weekly show, Politiquement parlant (meaning "politically speaking").
In 2012, Trierweiler decided to continue working as a journalist for Paris Match magazine. This was even though her partner, François Hollande, had become the President of France.
On 12 June 2012, Trierweiler caused some discussion with a tweet. She tweeted support for Olivier Falorni, a different candidate from the same political party. This was against Ségolène Royal, who was François Hollande's former partner and the candidate he supported.
In 2017, Trierweiler published her first novel, Le secret d'Adèle. This book tells the story of Adele Bloch-Bauer. Adele is famous for being the subject of a painting by Gustav Klimt called Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I.
Personal Life and Relationships
Valérie Trierweiler's first marriage was to her childhood friend, Franck Thurieau. They later divorced and did not have children together. Her second marriage was to Denis Trierweiler. He worked as a sub-editor (someone who checks and edits articles) at Paris Match magazine. He was also a writer. Valérie and Denis had three children together. Their divorce process took three years, from 2007 to 2010.
Trierweiler first met François Hollande during the parliamentary elections in 1988. At that time, he was living with Ségolène Royal. Valérie and François began their relationship in 2007. They made their relationship public in October 2010, after her divorce was finalized.
In January 2014, news stories came out that led to her relationship with François Hollande ending. On 10 January, Trierweiler was admitted to the hospital for rest. On 25 January, it was announced that her relationship with Hollande had ended.
In September 2014, Trierweiler published a book called Merci pour ce moment (which means Thank You for This Moment). The book shares details about her relationship with François Hollande and their breakup.
