A Look Back in Time
For a long time, Valdemorillo was part of the land of Segovia. This lasted from the late Middle Ages until the early 1800s. Then, it became part of the province of Madrid.
Where is Valdemorillo?
Valdemorillo is surrounded by other towns. To the north, it borders El Escorial. To the west, you'll find Robledo de Chavela and Navalagamella. Colmenarejo is to the east. To the south, it borders Villanueva de la Cañada and Quijorna.
Important Areas and Roads
Valdemorillo has many neighborhoods and communities. Some of these include Mojadillas, El Paraiso, and Pino Alto. There are also Jarabeltrán, Puentelasierra, and La Esperanza. Other areas are Montemorillo, Parque de las Infantas, and La Pizarrera. Mirador del Romero, Mirador de Pino Alto, and Los Barrancos are also part of it. Valmayor and Cerro Alarcón I and II are here too. Cerro Alarcón is shared with Navalagamella.
Two main roads pass through Valdemorillo. The M-600 connects El Escorial with Navalcarnero. The M-510 goes from Galapagar to Chapinería.
Water Supply and Nature
Valdemorillo helps supply drinking water to the Community of Madrid. A part of the Valmayor reservoir is located in this town. This reservoir also touches the towns of El Escorial and Colmenarejo. It is the second-largest reservoir in the Madrid region. Only El Atazar reservoir holds more water.
Part of Valdemorillo is inside a special nature area. This area is called the Regional Park of the middle course of the Guadarrama River. The town is also part of a special tourist route. This route is known as the Imperial Route of the Community of Madrid. It follows the paths that King Philip II used. He traveled from Madrid to the Monastery of El Escorial on these roads.
Fun Festivals and Traditions
Valdemorillo is famous for its first bullfighting fair of the year. This event happens in early February. It is part of the big festivals for San Blas. This fair officially starts the bull season in Spain. It takes place in the La Candelaria bullring. This bullring opened in 2003.
The town honors San Blas and La Candelaria as its patron saints. Their feast days are on February 2nd and 3rd. These dates were chosen for a special reason. In 1574, a royal procession passed through Valdemorillo. It was carrying the body of Emperor Charles I. He was on his way to the Monastery of El Escorial. This is why Valdemorillo is part of the Imperial Route of the Community of Madrid.
