Valerian Ivanovich Abakovsky was a talented Soviet engineer. He is famous for inventing the Aerowagon. This was a special high-speed train car. It had an airplane engine and a propeller!

Valerian's Early Life
Valerian Abakovsky was born in Riga on October 5, 1895. Riga is now in Latvia. He was a very smart inventor. Even so, he worked as a driver for a group called the Cheka in Tambov.
What Was the Aerowagon?
The Aerowagon was Valerian Abakovsky's most famous invention. It was an experimental train car. It was built for high speeds. The Aerowagon had an airplane engine. It also used a propeller to move. It was designed to carry important Soviet officials.
The Tragic Accident
On July 24, 1921, a group of people tested the Aerowagon. They traveled from Moscow to Tula. Valerian Abakovsky was on board too. The trip to Tula was successful. But on the way back to Moscow, something went wrong.
The Aerowagon went off the tracks. It was traveling at a very high speed. Seven people out of 22 on board died in the accident. Valerian Abakovsky was one of them. He was only 25 years old.

Where They Were Buried
The seven men who died were honored. Their bodies were placed at the House of the Unions. Then, they were buried in the Kremlin Wall Necropolis in Moscow. This is a special burial place. Sergeyev was buried in Mass Grave No. 12. Abakovsky, Konstantinov, and Freeman were buried in Mass Grave No. 13. Strupat, Helbrich, and Hewlett were buried in Mass Grave No. 14.
