Valero Rivera López (born on February 14, 1953) is a famous Spanish handball coach and former player. He is known for coaching the Spanish national team to a World Championship win in 2013.
Rivera played for and coached FC Barcelona. Many people consider him a true legend of the club. In 2012, the International Handball Federation named him the best men's coach in the world.
He is also the father of another handball player, Valero Rivera Folch. Valero Rivera López even coached his son at one point!

Playing Handball
Valero Rivera spent his entire playing career with Barcelona. He joined the main team in the 1971-72 season. He played until 1983. During his time as a player, he helped the club win 8 important titles.
Coaching Handball Teams
When Valero Rivera retired from playing at age 31, he became a coach for Barcelona. He took over from Jordi Petit. He coached the club for 21 years, from 1983 to 2003. Under his guidance, Barcelona became one of the best handball teams in the world. They won many titles, including the EHF Champions League several times. He left the club in 2005, having won over 70 club titles!
Coaching Spain's National Team
In 2008, Valero Rivera became the head coach of the Spanish national team. His first big success was at the 2011 World Championship. There, his team won bronze medals. A year later, he coached Spain in the 2012 European Men's Handball Championship in Serbia.
In 2013, he achieved a huge goal. He led the Spanish team to win the World Championship right in their home country, Spain!
Coaching Qatar's National Team
Later in 2013, Valero Rivera took on a new challenge. He became the coach of the Qatari national team. He had great success there too. He led Qatar to win the Asian Championship five times in a row. These wins happened from 2014 to 2022. He also coached the Qatari team at the 2015 World Championship. He retired from coaching the Qatari national team in 2023.

Valero Rivera has a degree in sport. He earned it from the Instituto Nacional de Educación Física de Cataluña.
