Valiulla Makhmutovich Yakupov (born September 4, 1963 – died July 19, 2012) was an important Muslim religious leader in Tatarstan, Russia. He served as an assistant to the main religious leader, called the chief mufti, in the Muslim region. Yakupov was known for speaking out against groups that had very strict or extreme ideas about Islam. He also started Russia's first publishing house focused on Islamic books and literature.
His Death
What Happened
Valiulla Yakupov was shot and killed on July 19, 2012. This happened near his home on Zarya Street in Kazan, Tatarstan. Some reports say he was walking, while others say he was on his porch.
Soon after Yakupov's death, the chief mufti, Ildus Faizov, was also attacked. An explosive device went off near his car, injuring his legs. The day after Yakupov's killing, police in Russia arrested five people. They were suspected of being involved in his death.
