What's in a Name?
The name "Valley" has been a puzzle for over a hundred years! People have many ideas about where it came from.
One idea is that "Valley" might come from an old word, "Mael-dy," which means "house of trade." Some think this connects to ancient times when people traded with Ireland from this area.
Other ideas suggest the area was once called Glan Môr Tŷ Coch or Glan Môr Castell Llyfaint. Two more thoughts about the name "Valley" are:
- It could come from the Irish language word Baile, meaning "a settlement."
- It might have started when the Stanley Embankment was built in the 1820s. Workers dug a deep hole, like a valley, to get rocks for building. The homes nearby were then called "Valley" by these workers.
Today, in Modern Welsh, the village is called either Y Dyffryn (meaning "The Valley") or [Y] Fali (which sounds like Valley).
