Valley of the Queens facts for kids
The Valley of the Queens (which in Arabic is Wādī al Malekāt) is a special place in Egypt. Long ago, in ancient times, it was where the wives of Pharaohs (the kings of ancient Egypt) were buried. It was also a burial place for some royal children and other important people. Back then, it was called Ta-Set-Neferu, which means "the place of beauty."
Why Was This Place Chosen?
It's not completely clear why the Valley of the Queens was picked as a burial site. It is close to a village called Deir el-Medina, where the workers who built the tombs lived. It's also near the famous Valley of the Kings, where many pharaohs were buried.
Another reason might be a special, sacred cave found at the entrance of the valley. This cave was dedicated to Hathor, an important goddess in ancient Egypt. People believed this cave could help the dead become young again in the afterlife.
Tombs in the Valley
The main part of the valley has 91 tombs. If you look at the smaller valleys nearby, you'll find another 19 tombs. This shows how many important people were laid to rest here.
