Valtimo was a small area in Finland that used to be its own local government area. It was located in the North Karelia region of Finland. In 2019, about 2,140 people lived there.

Valtimo covered an area of about 838 square kilometers (323 square miles). A small part of this area, about 37 square kilometers (14 square miles), was water. This means most of Valtimo was land. The people living in Valtimo spoke only Finnish.

History of Valtimo

Valtimo became an official municipality, or local government area, in 1910. For many years, it managed its own local services. These services included things like schools and roads.

Merger with Nurmes

On January 1, 2020, Valtimo joined with the nearby town of Nurmes. This means Valtimo is no longer a separate municipality. Now, it is part of the larger Nurmes area. This kind of merger happens when smaller areas combine to form a bigger one.

Geography and Neighbors

Valtimo was located in eastern Finland. It was surrounded by other areas. Its neighbors were the municipalities of Nurmes, Rautavaara, and Sotkamo. These areas are also in the same part of Finland.
