Where is Valverde de Llerena Located?
Valverde de Llerena is found near the towns of Ahillones and Guadalcanal. It is quite close to the border of the Seville province. The town sits on a gentle slope, surrounded by hills. These hills are part of the lower areas of the Sierra Morena mountain range.

The town is part of the commercial area of Extremadura in Badajoz. It also belongs to the judicial district of Llerena. This means it is connected to the legal system based in Llerena.
Exploring the History of Valverde de Llerena
The name Valverde de Llerena comes from its founder, Don Rodrigo de Valverde. However, the town has had other names over time. In the late 1400s, it was called Valverde de la Reina. It was also known as "Azuaga Valverde" because it was once under the control of the nearby town of Azuaga.
How the Town Was Founded
Valverde de Llerena was founded in the year 1240. Don Rodrigo Valverde, a knight from the Order of Santiago, established the town. He was a commander of Valez. In the mid-1200s, he helped people settle there by giving them special rights.
Becoming a Part of the Order of Santiago
The new town came under the control of the Order of Santiago. This was a powerful religious and military order in Spain. In 1594, a census showed that Valverde de Llerena was part of the Order of Santiago's territory in Leon. At that time, it had 232 "pecheros" (tax-paying households).
Changes in Ownership and Status
In 1559, Valverde de Llerena gained the title of "villa" (a small town with special rights). This was granted by King Philip. Later, in 1586, it was separated from the Order of Santiago's lands. The town was sold to Mariana de Córdova, who was the Marchioness of Villanueva del Río. Eventually, it became part of the large properties owned by the House of Alba, a very important noble family.
Valverde de Llerena in Modern Times
In the past, the town was part of the municipal area in northeastern Extremadura. Since 1834, it has been part of the judicial district of Llerena.
Important Buildings and Heritage
The main religious building in Valverde de Llerena is the Catholic parish church. It is dedicated to La Purísima Concepción (the Immaculate Conception). This church belongs to the Archdiocese of Mérida-Badajoz.
