Vampireology: The True History of the Fallen Ones is an exciting fantasy book all about vampires. It was first released in the United Kingdom on May 11, 2010, by Templar Publishing. In the United States, Candlewick Press published it with a slightly shorter title: Vampireology: The True History of the Fallen. This book is presented as if it was written by a famous vampire-slayer, or "Protector," named Archibald Brooks. It is the ninth book in the popular Ologies series and has sold more than 16 million copies around the world!

What the Book is About

The story in Vampireology pretends to be a real journal written in 1900 by Archibald Brooks. He was a main "Protector," meaning he fought against vampires.

One day, Brooks sent a message to his friend, Joshua T. Kraik, who was a private investigator. Brooks asked Joshua to come to his office. He also told Joshua to look inside a casket if he arrived too late. Sadly, Brooks was killed on May 10, 1920, right in his office at the British Museum.

The very next day, Joshua went to see his friend. He searched Brooks' office and found the book. He realized Brooks wanted him to have it. So, Joshua took the book home. As he started reading, he discovered that he was meant to be the next Protector! He read very carefully, taking in all the important information. He learned about the first three "Fallen Ones" and their special vampire families.

These original Fallen Ones were:

  • Moloch, the destroyer, whose family kills just for fun.
  • Ba'al, the deceiver, whose family can control minds.
  • Belial, the tortured, whose family feels guilty for their ancestor's choice to go against Heaven. Belials can still feel normal human emotions, but they must still feed on humans.

As Joshua read, he added his own notes to the book. These notes included how he was doing, bits of his personal life, drawings, newspaper clippings, and his feelings about the book. He also added drafts of letters.

On May 14, 1920, Joshua received a letter from a strange woman in Venice. She claimed she and Brooks were close friends. She also said Brooks had promised her the book. Joshua did not believe her. But he wrote back, saying he could not give her the book yet. He suggested they keep in touch. After a few more letters, Joshua decided to visit her in Venice.

While reading the book at his hotel, he got another letter. This one was short and scary. Joshua wrote in his notes that he always felt she was not what she seemed.

On the very last page of the book, there was a hidden letter for Joshua. Brooks told Joshua to destroy the woman using the Sword of Angels. This was Archangel Michael's sword, which he used to defeat the first three Fallen Ones: Moloch, Ba'al, and Belial. It is the only sword that can destroy these powerful vampires. Brooks' letter helped Joshua understand more about the mysterious woman from Venice.

The book ends with Joshua's final notes and two newspaper clippings. One reported the murder of another of Joshua's friends. The other reported a palazzo (a large building) burning in Venice. This suggests Joshua won his first fight as a Protector.

Film Plans

On January 31, 2018, Paramount Pictures announced plans to make movies based on all 13 Ology books. They set up a special team of writers, including Jeff Pinkner, Michael Chabon, Lindsey Beer, Joe Robert Cole, Nicole Perlman, and Christina Hodson.

The idea is for each writer to work with artists to create movie ideas. These ideas will then turn into seven movie scripts. All the movies will have stories that connect to each other. Akiva Goldsman will be in charge of overseeing and producing these films.
