Van Buskirk is a small, unincorporated community located in the town of Oma. It is found in Iron County, Wisconsin, in the United States. An unincorporated community is a group of homes or buildings that does not have its own official local government like a city or town.
A Look Back in Time
The community of Van Buskirk was named after two brothers, George and Charles Van Buskirk. They owned a sawmill in the area, which was a very important business. Their sawmill operated for a few years, from 1889 to 1893.
A post office was opened in Van Buskirk in 1890. This post office helped people send and receive mail. It stayed open for many years until it finally closed in 1933.
Railroad Connections
Van Buskirk also had a railroad line running through it. This train line connected the community to other places. It went north and west to Ashland and south to Eland.
Trains carried passengers on this line for a long time. Passenger service continued until 1973, when a new national train system called Amtrak was created. After that, the railroad still carried freight, which means goods and materials. Freight trains continued to use the line through Van Buskirk until the early 1980s. Eventually, the railroad line was no longer used.
