Vancouver International Film Festival facts for kids
The Vancouver International Film Festival (often called VIFF) is a big movie event that happens every year in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. It takes place for about two weeks in late September and early October. This festival started in 1982 and is organized by a group called the Greater Vancouver International Film Festival Society. It's one of the five largest movie festivals in North America!
What Makes VIFF Special?
VIFF is known for showing a huge variety of movies from all over the world. It's especially famous for a few reasons:
- It screens the largest collection of movies from East Asia (like Japan, South Korea, and China) outside of Asia itself.
- It's one of the biggest places to see Canadian films anywhere in the world. This means you can see many movies made right here in Canada.
- It has a very large program of nonfiction films, also known as documentaries. These are movies that tell true stories, and VIFF shows more of them than almost any other festival, except for those specifically about documentaries.
Where Does VIFF Happen?
The festival takes place in different movie theaters and venues around Vancouver. One important place is the Vancouver International Film Centre, which opened in 2005. This building is not only the main office for the festival but also one of the places where movies are shown.
