Vanderbilt is a ghost town in Eureka County, in the western state of Nevada, in the United States. A ghost town is a place where most people have left, often because the main reason for the town's existence, like mining, ended.

History of Vanderbilt

Vanderbilt was once a busy mining town. In 1870, about 150 people lived there. The town had two boarding houses and two saloons. Even more people, around 300 miners, worked in the nearby mining areas.

In August 1871, Vanderbilt got its own Post Office. This was a sign that the town was growing.

However, things started to change. Another town called Eureka began to grow very fast. Many people from Vanderbilt decided to move to Eureka for better opportunities.

In 1872, a big fire hit Vanderbilt. It destroyed the town's mill, which was very important for processing the mined materials. This made things even harder for the town.

By 1880, only 25 people were left in Vanderbilt. The Post Office closed in 1885. It had briefly reopened as "Geddes" from March 1882 to June 1885. By 1887, the few remaining mines also shut down.

Today, all that is left of Vanderbilt are the ruins of the old mill. The road to Vanderbilt is very difficult and dangerous to travel.
