Vanderpool is a small place in Highland County, Virginia, United States. It's known as an unincorporated community. This means it's a group of homes and businesses that isn't officially a town or city. Vanderpool is also sometimes called Galltown, Gaul Town, or Woodsborough.

Discovering Vanderpool's Location

Vanderpool is located about 3.8 miles (6.1 km) southwest of Monterey, Virginia. You can find it where Virginia State Route 84 and U.S. Route 220 meet. The community is very close to a special place called Vanderpool Gap. The Jackson River flows right through this gap.

How Vanderpool Got Its Name

Vanderpool was named after a brave explorer from the Netherlands. His name was John Vanderpool. He was the very first person to travel through this area on horseback. During his journey, he discovered the Vanderpool Gap. This important discovery led to the community being named in his honor.

A Look at Vanderpool's Early History

Before Highland County was officially created in 1847, there was a big discussion. People needed to decide where the new county's seat would be. The county seat is like the main town where the government offices are located. Vanderpool was suggested as the perfect spot for this important role. However, after much debate, the idea was not chosen. Instead, the nearby town of Monterey became the county seat.
