Vangaži is a town located in the Ropaži Municipality in the Vidzeme region of Latvia. As of 2024, about 3,192 people live there. It's a small but interesting place with a history tied to local industries and sports.

Discovering Vangaži: A Look at Its Past

The name Vangaži was first written down in the 1600s. It was the name of a large country estate, also known as a manor. The name comes from two words in the Livonian language: vang, meaning "field," and aži, meaning "place." So, Vangaži means "field place."

Early Buildings and Businesses

Since the 17th century, there has been a Lutheran church in Vangaži. This shows that people have lived and worshipped here for a very long time. Close to where the town is now, there were also several factories. These factories made different products like paper, glass, and even copper items.

How Vangaži Became a Town

The modern town of Vangaži started to grow in the 1950s. This happened when a large factory that made concrete was built. In 1957, a village called Oktobra ciemats was created for the workers. A few years later, in 1961, this village was renamed Vangaži. It continued to grow, and in 1992, Vangaži was officially given the status of a town.

Sports in Vangaži: A Football Story

For many years, Vangaži was known for its strong football team. From 1968 to 1991, the town had a popular club. It was first called Celtnieks Vangaži, and later changed its name to Betons Vangaži.

Playing in the Top League

From 1989 to 1991, the Betons Vangaži team played in the Virsliga, which is the top football league in Latvia. The team was coached by Vladimirs Serbins. This was a big achievement for a small town.

A Notable Player from Vangaži

Sadly, the football club stopped playing when the concrete factory went out of business. However, Vangaži is still proud of its connection to football. One of the most famous footballers from Vangaži is Viktors Morozs, who played for the Latvia national football team.
