Vannette William Johnson (born May 27, 1930 – died May 12, 2022) was an important person in American sports. He was a coach for both American football and track teams. He also worked as a leader for college sports programs. He was the main football coach at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff for 11 years, from 1962 to 1972. During his time, his teams won 53 games, lost 46, and tied 6.
Early Life and Education
Vannette Johnson grew up in Little Rock, Arkansas. He went to Dunbar High School and finished in 1948. He loved football and played as a quarterback for Arkansas AM&N College. He graduated from college in 1952 with a degree in history and government. Later, in 1961, he earned another degree in physical education from the University of Arkansas.
Coaching Career
Johnson started his coaching journey in 1952. He was an assistant coach at Merrill High School in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. In 1957, he returned to Arkansas AM&N College. There, he became the backfield coach for the football team. He also took on the role of head track coach.
In 1962, Johnson was given two big jobs at the college. He became the head football coach. He also became the athletic director, which means he was in charge of all the sports programs at the school. He led the football team for 11 seasons.
Later Life
Vannette Johnson passed away in Pine Bluff, Arkansas on May 12, 2022. He was 91 years old.
