Indian sweets garnished with vark

Vark is a super thin sheet of pure metal. It is usually made from silver, but sometimes it can be gold. People use vark to decorate South Asian sweets and other food. It is also placed on special saffroned rice to make it look more appealing. Both silver and gold vark are safe to eat and have no taste at all.

What is Vark?

Vark is a very delicate, shiny sheet. It is so thin that it can break easily if you touch it. Imagine a piece of paper that is thousands of times thinner! This special foil is used to make food look fancy and beautiful, especially for celebrations.

How is Vark Made?

Vark is made by pounding pure silver into sheets that are incredibly thin. These sheets are only a few micrometres thick. To give you an idea, a micrometre is one-millionth of a metre. This means vark is much thinner than a human hair! The process requires great skill to create such fine, edible foil.

Where is Vark Used?

You will often see vark on many delicious South Asian sweets. It makes them sparkle and look extra special for festivals and parties. Besides sweets, vark is also used on dry fruits and spices to add a touch of elegance. It's a unique way to make food not just tasty, but also a feast for the eyes!
