The Vashi Bridge, also known as the Thane Creek Bridge, is an important bridge in India. It connects the city of Mumbai to Navi Mumbai, which is a planned city on the mainland. This bridge crosses over the Thane Creek, a body of water.
The Vashi Bridge links the area of Mankhurd in Mumbai with Vashi in Navi Mumbai. It is one of the main ways to enter Mumbai. The bridge helps a lot of vehicles travel between these two busy cities every day.
Building the Vashi Bridge
Why a New Bridge Was Needed
The first bridge connecting Mumbai to Navi Mumbai was built in 1973. It was about 1,837 meters (6,027 feet) long. This bridge had only three lanes for cars, which was not enough for all the traffic.
Sadly, just two years after it opened, the first bridge started to have problems. Cracks appeared on some parts because of rust. This meant the bridge needed many repairs. Because of these issues, people decided to build a brand new bridge to replace the old one.
Construction and Opening
Work on the new Vashi Bridge began in 1987. It took ten years to build. The bridge finally opened to traffic in 1997. The original Vashi Bridge, or the first Thane Creek Bridge, is now closed and not used by vehicles.
The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) has plans for the future. They want to add six more lanes to the Vashi Bridge. This will help even more cars and trucks cross the creek easily.
