Vatroslav Mimica (born June 25, 1923, died February 15, 2020) was a famous film director and writer from Croatia. He made many movies, both animated cartoons and live-action films. He was known for his creative storytelling and unique style.

Early Life and Education
Vatroslav Mimica was born in a town called Omiš. Before World War II started, he began studying medicine at the University of Zagreb School of Medicine. During the war, he joined a group called the Yugoslav Partisans in 1943. He worked in their medical teams.
A Career in Filmmaking
After the war, Mimica wrote about books and movies. His journey into filmmaking started in 1950. He became the director of a film studio called Jadran Film.
Animated Films
Mimica first directed and wrote a film in 1952. It was a Yugoslav film called In the Storm (U oluji in Croatian). In the 1950s, Mimica worked on many popular animated films. He became a key member of the Zagreb School of Animated Films. This was a famous group of animators.
His animated short film from 1958, The Loner (Samac), won a big award called the Venice Grand Prix. He worked alongside other great animators like Vlado Kristl and Dušan Vukotić. Dušan Vukotić even won an Academy Award for his work.
Directing Feature Films
In the 1960s, Mimica started making live-action feature films. His last animated film was The Firemen (Vatrogasci) in 1971. He began directing feature films with the 1961 movie Suleiman the Conqueror. This film was made with Italy.
His 1965 film Prometheus of the Island (Prometej s otoka Viševice) won a major award. It received the Big Golden Arena for Best Film at the Pula Film Festival in 1965. Mimica also won a Silver Arena award for Best Director for this film. It was also shown at the 4th Moscow International Film Festival.
The next year, his 1966 film Monday or Tuesday (Ponedjeljak ili utorak) also won the Big Golden Arena for Best Film. Mimica won the Golden Arena for Best Director for this movie too.
Mimica made several other films in the 1970s. Two notable ones were historical films. Anno Domini 1573 (Seljačka buna 1573) showed the Croatian-Slovenian peasant revolt from the 16th century. The Falcon (Banović Strahinja) was set in 14th century Serbia. He stopped making films in 1981.
Family Life
Vatroslav Mimica's son is Sergio Mimica-Gezzan. Sergio is also a film and television director in America.
