Who Was Emperor Vijaya Raya?
Vijaya Raya became the emperor of the Vijayanagara Empire in 1423 CE. He took over after his brother, Ramachandra Raya. Their father was Deva Raya I, another well-known emperor.
His Time as Ruler
Vijaya Raya's time as emperor was quite short. He ruled for about one year, from 1423 to 1424 CE. Some historical records, like those by Fernao Nuniz, suggest his reign might have been longer, around six years.
Facing Challenges
During his rule, Vijaya Raya faced a big challenge. The Bahmani Sultanate, led by Ahmad Shah I Wali, invaded the Vijayanagara Empire. The Bahmanis were a rival kingdom.
The Siege of Vijayanagar
The two sides fought in a major battle called the Siege of Vijayanagar. In this battle, the Bahmani forces defeated Vijayanagar. They managed to take back some lands they had lost earlier.
After his short reign, Vijaya Raya was succeeded by his son, Deva Raya II. Deva Raya II would go on to become a very significant ruler in the history of the Vijayanagara Empire.
