Vegas Pro (also known as Sony Vegas) is a powerful computer program for editing videos. It's used by professionals to create movies, TV shows, and other video projects. This type of editing is called non-linear editing (NLE), which means you can edit any part of your video at any time, not just from start to finish.

The first version of Vegas was released on June 11, 1999. It runs on Windows computers.

Vegas Pro started as a program just for editing audio (sound). But with version 2.0, it became a full video and audio editor.

What Can Vegas Pro Do?

Vegas Pro lets you edit videos and audio on many different tracks at the same time. You can work with videos of any size or resolution. It has many tools for special effects and combining different video clips. It also supports high-quality audio and special sound effects.

One cool thing about Vegas Pro is that it doesn't need special computer parts to work. If your Windows computer meets the basic system requirements, you can use it!

Creating Visual Effects

Vegas Pro has great tools for compositing and motion graphics. Compositing means combining different images or videos into one. For example, you can use a green screen to put yourself in a different background. Vegas Pro lets you control how objects look in a 3D space.

Many of the visual effects in Vegas work like audio effects. You can add effects to different parts of your video, just like you add reverb or delay to sound.

Working with Video and Audio

Even though Vegas started with audio, it's mostly used for video editing now. It's great for making professional videos.

Vegas Pro can easily change video formats, like converting videos to 24p (a common film frame rate). It's also one of the few video editors that lets you open many versions of the program at once. This means you could be making a video in one window while another video is being saved in the background!

Nesting Projects

Vegas Pro has a feature called "nesting." This means you can take a finished video project and put it inside a new, larger project. It's like putting a smaller video clip into a bigger one. If you make changes to the smaller project, they will automatically show up in the bigger one. This is super helpful for big projects or when you're adding lots of special effects.

Vegas 1.0 was first released by Sonic Foundry on July 23, 1999. At first, it was only for editing audio. People liked how easy it was to use.

Early Versions and Ownership Changes

On June 12, 2000, Vegas Video and Audio 2.0 came out. This was a big step because it was the first version that could edit videos! It also had a cheaper "LE" version for people who didn't need all the professional tools.

Vegas 3.0 was released in 2001, adding new video effects and making it easier to work with DV cameras. Vegas 4.0 came out in 2003, bringing more advanced color tools and sound mixing. This was the last version released by Sonic Foundry. Later in 2003, Sony bought Vegas and other software from Sonic Foundry.

Under Sony's ownership, Vegas 5.0 was released in 2005. It added cool features like 3D track motion and better ways to combine videos. With Vegas Pro 8.0, Sony brought back the "Vegas Pro" name. This version allowed users to burn Blu-ray and DVD discs. Sony also started making a 64-bit version called "Vegas Pro 8.1."

Vegas Pro 9.0, released in 2009, added support for 4K resolution videos and professional camera formats. Sony also bought some special video effects (called Velvetmatter Radiance) and included them in Vegas Pro 9.0.

Modern Vegas Pro Versions

Vegas Pro 10 came out in 2010. It allowed editing of stereoscopic 3D videos (like those you see with 3D glasses) and had better image stabilization. This was the last version that worked on Windows XP.

Vegas Pro 11, released in 2011, made video editing faster by using your computer's graphics card. It also included a new tool for creating 2D and 3D titles called "NewBlue Titler Pro." Vegas Pro 12 offered different versions, like "Edit" for basic editing and "Suite" for more advanced features.

Vegas Pro 13 was the last version released by Sony. In 2016, Magix bought Vegas Pro from Sony.

Magix released Vegas Pro 14 on September 20, 2016. It had better 4K video upscaling and fixed many issues. Vegas Pro 15, released in 2017, brought big changes to how the program looked, making it easier to use. It also made editing faster and added support for Intel Quick Sync Video.

Vegas Pro 16 added new features like file backup, motion tracking (to follow objects in your video), better video stabilization, and 360° video editing. Magix has continued to improve Vegas Pro, with version 21 adding support for more file types, better live streaming, and improved sound tools.

Magix also offers a subscription plan called "Vegas Pro 365," but you can still buy the program outright if you prefer.
