History of the Vengaboys
How the Group Started (1996–1998)
The name "Vengaboys" first belonged to a music project by producers Danski and Delmundo. In 1997, they decided to form a pop group. They chose Kim Sasabone as the main singer. After auditions, Denise Post-Van Rijswijk, Roy den Burger, and Robin Pors joined. This completed the group.
In August 1997, their first song "Parada de Tettas" came out. Then came "To Brazil!" in December 1997. "Up and Down" followed in February 1998.
In April 1998, they released their first album, Up & Down - The Party Album. It was popular in the Netherlands and Belgium. The album sold very well in the Netherlands. In May, "We Like to Party!" was released. It reached number 2 in the Netherlands and number 1 in Belgium.
In October, the group released "Boom, Boom, Boom, Boom!!". Their album Greatest Hits! Part 1 also came out. This album reached number 1 in the Dutch charts.
In November 1998, "Up and Down" entered the UK charts at number 4. "We Like to Party!" was released worldwide in 1999. It was a top 10 hit in many countries. These included Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. It even reached number 26 on the American Billboard Hot 100 chart.
In June 1999, Greatest Hits! Part 1 was re-released as The Party Album. The song "Boom Boom Boom Boom" became number one in the UK, New Zealand, and the Netherlands. In November 1999, "Boom, Boom, Boom, Boom!!" was used in a TV ad in Japan for Nissan.
"We're Going to Ibiza" was another big hit. It was a new version of an old song called "Barbados". This song also reached number one in the Netherlands in September 1999. The Party Album stayed on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart for 30 weeks. It sold over 500,000 copies.
In January 2000, The Remix Album was released. It had new dance versions of their first album's songs.
New Album and Break (2000–2002)
Before their next album, Robin Pors left the group. He wanted to start a solo career. Yorick Bakker, a dolphin trainer, took his place.
The Platinum Album came out in early 2000. It was also very successful. Its first three songs were "Kiss (When the Sun Don't Shine)", "Shalala Lala", and "Uncle John from Jamaica". All these songs were popular in Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada. The first two even reached number one in New Zealand. For the fourth song, "Cheekah Bow Bow (That Computer Song)", the group added a cartoon character named Cheekah.
In 2002, Denise Post-Van Rijswijk and Yorick Bakker left the group. The group then took a break.
Coming Back to Music (2007–2009)
In 2007, the Vengaboys returned to performing. Donny Latupeirissa, also known as Ma'Donny, joined the group. He replaced Roy den Burger.
