Venison Island is a small island located off the coast of Labrador, which is part of Newfoundland and Labrador in Canada. It's a place with a cool history, especially about the people who used to live and work there.
Exploring Venison Island
Venison Island is not very big. It measures about 1,200 meters long and 550 meters wide. That's about the length of 12 football fields!
Where is Venison Island?
This island is found in the Labrador Sea. It is very close to another island called Stony Island. A narrow water channel, known as Venison Tickle, separates the two islands.
Life on the Island Long Ago
Many years ago, Venison Island was a busy place. It had a lively fishing community. People lived there all year round.
- Fishing Community: The island had a busy wharf. A wharf is like a dock where boats can tie up. Fishermen would bring their catches here.
- Wireless Station: There was also a special station for a wireless telegraph. This was an early way to send messages using radio waves, like a very old-fashioned text message system! Its code was "VI".
- Island Population: In 1901, about 36 people lived on Venison Island all the time. They made their homes and lives there.
Today, Venison Island is mostly uninhabited, meaning people don't live there permanently anymore. But it remains a part of the beautiful and rugged landscape of Labrador.
