Venus Bay (New Zealand) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Venus Bay is a special place found on New Zealand's remote Campbell Island. It is located within a larger area called Perseverance Harbour. This beautiful bay has a unique history connected to science and exploration.

A Name from the Stars

Venus Bay got its name from an exciting event that happened in 1874. A group of French scientists traveled all the way to Campbell Island. Their mission was to watch a rare event called the Transit of Venus. This is when the planet Venus passes directly in front of the Sun. It looks like a small black dot moving across the Sun's bright face.

Scientists used these observations to measure distances in space. The French team set up their camp right at this bay. Because of their important visit, many places on Campbell Island now have French names. These include Mount Fizeau and Mount Dumas, named after members of the expedition.

Where is Campbell Island?

Campbell Island is part of New Zealand's subantarctic islands. These islands are located far south in the Pacific Ocean. They are known for their wild weather and unique wildlife.
