Verónica Abad Rojas (born 14 November 1976) is an Ecuadorian politician and business coach. She is the current Vice President of Ecuador. She became Vice President after the 2023 general election. Before this, she worked on projects to help young people and women start their own businesses.
In November 2024, she was temporarily suspended from her role as Vice President for 150 days.
Early Life and Education
Verónica Abad was born in Cuenca, a city in Ecuador. She grew up in a family of musicians. When she was a child, she practiced ballet and learned to play musical instruments like the piano and violin.
Abad studied Business Administration. She also took short courses in other areas. These included Entrepreneurship in Santiago de Chile, Political Strategy in Germany, and Innovation and Technology in Jerusalem.
Political Career
Verónica Abad started her political journey in 2006. She took part in local elections in Ecuador. Later, she founded the Network of Women Directors. This group worked on international projects. These projects aimed to support young people and women in starting their own businesses.
From 2020 to 2022, Abad worked at the Secretary Against Child Malnutrition. This role focused on helping children get enough food.
In 2023, Abad ran for Mayor of Cuenca. She was a candidate for the AMIGO Movement. Later that year, she joined Daniel Noboa as his running mate for the general election. They ran together under the National Democratic Action party. They surprised many by making it to the final round of the election.
After she was elected Vice President in 2023, Verónica Abad was given a special job. President Daniel Noboa asked her to be a Special Envoy for Peace to Israel. Her task was to help with talks and reduce tensions after the 2023 Israel–Hamas war. This role meant she was working away from the main government in Ecuador.
On 9 November 2024, Abad Rojas was temporarily suspended from her Vice President role. This happened after she did not travel from Israel to Turkey as requested. However, on 23 December 2024, a judge ruled that her suspension was against the law. She was then ordered to be reinstated as Vice President.
