Vera Kublanovskaya facts for kids

Vera Nikolaevna Kublanovskaya (born November 21, 1920 – died February 21, 2012) was a Russian mathematician. She was famous for creating ways to solve tricky math problems using computers.

In 1961, she came up with a special math method called the QR algorithm. This algorithm helps find important numbers in math problems, known as eigenvalues and eigenvectors. Many people consider the QR algorithm to be one of the ten most important algorithms of the 1900s. An English computer scientist named John G.F. Francis also developed this algorithm around the same time.

Early life

Vera Kublanovskaya was born in November 1920. Her village was called Krokhona, and it was near Belozersk in Vologda Oblast, Russia. She grew up in a family of farmers and fishers, and she was one of nine children. She lived to be 91 years old and passed away in February 2012.

Education

Vera Kublanovskaya started her college studies in 1939. She went to the Gertzen Pedagogical Institute in Leningrad. There, she was encouraged to study mathematics.

In 1945, she moved on to study math at Leningrad State University. She graduated in 1948. After graduating, she joined the Steklov Mathematical Institute in Leningrad. She worked there for 64 years!

In 1955, she earned her first advanced degree, called a doctorate. This degree was about using math ideas to solve number problems. Later, in 1972, she earned a second advanced degree. This one was about using special math changes to solve algebra problems.

In October 1985, she received a special honorary degree from Umeå University in Sweden. She had worked with this university before.

Scientific works

During her first doctorate studies, Vera Kublanovskaya joined Leonid Kantorovich's team. This team was trying to create a common computer language in the Soviet Union. Her job was to choose and organize math steps (called matrix operations) that are helpful for computer math.

Her later work was very important for new math discoveries and for creating computer programs.
