Vere Fane was an English nobleman who lived a long time ago, from 1678 to 1698. He held a special title called the Earl of Westmorland. This title meant he was a "peer," which is like being a very important person in the country's government. He was a member of the House of Lords, a part of the British Parliament where important decisions were made.
Vere Fane was born on May 25, 1678. He was the second son of his father, who was also named Vere Fane and was the 4th Earl of Westmorland. His mother was Rachel Bence. Vere also had two younger brothers, Thomas and John.
Becoming an Earl
When Vere Fane was born, he was known as "The Honourable Vere Fane." This was a respectful way to address him because of his family's important position. Later, in 1691, he gained another title: "Lord le Despenser."
In 1693, when Vere was about 15 years old, his father passed away. This meant that Vere inherited his father's important titles. He became the 5th Earl of Westmorland. He also became the 5th Baron Burghersh and the 8th Lord le Despenser. These titles showed his high rank in English society.
A Short Life
Vere Fane's time as the Earl of Westmorland was quite short. He died on May 19, 1698, when he was just 19 years old. He never got married and did not have any children.
Because he had no children, his titles passed to his younger brother, Thomas Fane. Thomas then became the 6th Earl of Westmorland.
