Thomas Fane, 6th Earl of Westmorland was an important British nobleman and politician. He was born on October 3, 1681, and passed away on June 4, 1736. Early Life and Family
Thomas Fane was born into a noble family. His father was Vere Fane, 4th Earl of Westmorland. Thomas was the third son, but the second one to survive childhood. He had an older brother named Vere Fane and a younger brother named John Fane.
Becoming an Earl
When his older brother Vere died in 1699 without having any children, Thomas Fane became the next in line. He inherited the title of Earl of Westmorland. This also meant he received other important titles, such as Baron Burghersh and Baron le Despencer.
Important Roles and Public Service
Thomas Fane held many significant jobs throughout his career. These roles showed his dedication to public service and his country.
Serving the Monarchy
Thomas Fane worked closely with the royal family.
- In 1704, he became a Gentleman of the Bedchamber to Prince George of Denmark. Prince George was the husband of Queen Anne. This role meant he was a close attendant to the Prince.
- In 1715, he became a Lord of the Bedchamber to King George I. This was a similar, important role, showing his trusted position in the royal court.
Key Government Positions
Fane took on several high-ranking government jobs.
- From 1705 to 1708, he served as the Deputy Warden of the Cinque Ports. This was an important role in protecting the English coast.
- From 1719 to 1735, he was the First Lord of Trade. In this job, he helped manage Britain's trade and business.
- In 1735, he became the Lord-Lieutenant of Northamptonshire. This was a high-ranking position representing the monarch in that county.
- In 1717, he was made a Privy Counsellor. This meant he was a trusted advisor to the King.
Personal Life and Legacy
In 1707, Thomas Fane married Catherine Stringer. She was the daughter of Thomas Stringer. They were married for many years until Catherine passed away on February 4, 1730.
Thomas Fane himself died on June 4, 1736. He did not have any children. Because of this, his younger brother, John Fane, inherited his titles. John became the 7th Earl of Westmorland and also took on the titles of Baron Burghersh and Lord le Despencer.
