Benjamin Mildmay, 1st Earl FitzWalter (1672–1756) was an important British politician. He was also known as The Lord FitzWalter. He held several key government jobs during his career.

He served as the First Lord of Trade from 1735 to 1737. He was also the Treasurer of the Household from 1737 to 1755.

Early Life and Interests

Benjamin Mildmay was born on December 27, 1672. His father was Benjamin Mildmay, the 17th Baron FitzWalter. His mother was Catherine Fairfax.

He was interested in music and helped start the Royal Academy of Music. This company created operas in London. They hired famous composers like Handel and Bononcini.

Political Career

Benjamin Mildmay started his political career as a Commissioner of Excise. This job involved collecting taxes. He held this position from 1720 to 1728.

In 1728, he became the Baron FitzWalter. This meant he got a seat in the House of Lords. The House of Lords is part of the British Parliament.

In 1730, he received two new titles. He became Viscount Harwich and Earl FitzWalter.

In 1735, he joined the Privy Council. This is a group of advisors to the King. That same year, he was made the First Lord of Trade. He worked under the Prime Minister, Sir Robert Walpole. He held this role until 1737.

After that, he became the Treasurer of the Household. This was another important government job. He served in this role from 1736 until 1755.

He also served as the Lord-Lieutenant of Essex. This was a representative of the King in the county of Essex. He held this position from 1741 to 1756.

Personal Life

Lord FitzWalter married Lady Frederica Susanna in 1724. She was the daughter of the 3rd Duke of Schomberg. She had been married before.

Lord FitzWalter and Lady Frederica did not have any children. Lady Frederica passed away in August 1751.

Lord FitzWalter died in London in February 1756. He was 83 years old. Since he had no children, his titles of Viscount and Earl ended with him. The older title of Baron FitzWalter was later passed down to other family members.
