Vere Fane, 4th Earl of Westmorland was an important person in British history. He was born on February 13, 1645, and passed away on December 29, 1693. He held the title of Earl of Westmorland and was also a Member of Parliament. This means he was elected to help make laws for the country.

Vere Fane's Early Life and Family
Vere Fane was born at Lamport Hall in Buckinghamshire, England. His father was Mildmay Fane, 2nd Earl of Westmorland. Vere was the second son in his family. He had an older half-brother named Charles Fane, 3rd Earl of Westmorland.
In 1671, Vere Fane married Rachel Bence. They had a large family with eleven children. Some of their children who later became important were:
- Vere Fane, 5th Earl of Westmorland
- Thomas Fane, 6th Earl of Westmorland
- John Fane, 7th Earl of Westmorland
- The Honourable Mildmay Fane
Vere Fane passed away in 1693. His oldest son, also named Vere, inherited his father's titles. However, this son passed away young, before he turned 20.
Vere Fane's Political Career
Being a Member of Parliament was a family tradition for the Fanes. Vere Fane followed in the footsteps of his grandfather, father, and older brother. His own sons would also become Members of Parliament later on.
Serving as a Member of Parliament
Vere Fane served as a Member of Parliament for different areas:
- From 1671 to 1679, he represented Peterborough.
- From 1679 to 1681, he represented Kent.
- He served again for Kent from 1689 to 1691.
He was part of the Whig political group.
Becoming a Knight and an Earl
In 1661, Vere Fane was honored as a Knight of the Bath. This was a special award given by King Charles II.
In 1691, Vere Fane's older brother, Charles, passed away without any children. This meant that Vere inherited the title of Earl of Westmorland. He also became Baron Burghersh and Lord le Despencer.
