Schools and Learning

Beckham Combs Elementary School

Beckham Combs Elementary School used to be the local school near Vest. It was named after Beckham Combs, a person from Knott County. The school taught children from kindergarten through eighth grade. It closed in 2006. On average, about 136 students attended the school, and there were 8 teachers.

Now that Beckham Combs Elementary is closed, most students from Vest go to school in Hindman, Kentucky. They attend Hindman Elementary School and Knott County Central High School.

New Life for the School Building

After the elementary school closed, there was an idea to open the Beckham Combs Community Center in the building. However, this plan did not work out. The Big Branch Baptist Church bought the building instead. They now use it for their church and for the Bethel Christian Academy, which is a private school.

Hindman Settlement School

The Hindman Settlement School also helps families in the area. This school supports people who want to keep the special way of life found in the eastern Kentucky Appalachian Mountains.

Local Cemeteries

There are many family cemeteries in and around Vest. Some well-known ones include the Oscar Ritchie Cemetery, which is right where KY-1087 and KY-160 meet. The Dobson Cemetery is located across a former bridge and up a hill on KY-1087.

Another cemetery is the Alonzo Dobson Cemetery. You can find it off KY-1087 on Alonzo Dobson Family Cemetery Road, just before Johnson Lick Road. Many other cemeteries exist in Vest, but some are private or have been forgotten over time.

Fun Things to Do in Vest

Knott County Trail Ride

One of the biggest yearly events for people in Vest is the Knott County Trail Ride. This event happens on the first weekend of October every year. It takes place at the Mine Made Adventure Park and Campground, which is a popular spot for outdoor fun.

The Knott County Trail Ride is like a big carnival. It brings together local people and visitors who enjoy camping, listening to music, riding horses, and driving four-wheel drive vehicles on the trails and roads around the camping area.

Exploring "Buckhorn"

In many small towns in the southern United States, a popular activity is "going riding." During the summer in Vest, a favorite place to ride ATVs, dirt bikes, four-wheelers, horses, or even rugged vehicles is a place called Buckhorn.

Even though there is a town called Buckhorn, Kentucky in Perry County, "going to Buckhorn" in Vest means taking a ride up Buckhorn Creek Road. This road is a rough dirt road that runs next to Balls Fork of Troublesome Creek. People often camp and build fires at the end of this road during the summer. There are also smaller, unnamed parts of the road that follow different branches of Ball's Fork.
