A Look at Hindman's Past
Before Hindman became a town, the area was known as The Forks of Troublesome. The land for the town was given by a local landowner named Peyton Duke. However, the town was named after James Hindman, who was the lieutenant governor when the town was officially started in 1884. Hindman was created to be the center of government for the new Knott County.
Early Challenges and Education
In the early days, there were some disagreements among the first settlers. But people also worked hard to build the community. Education was very important. The Hindman Settlement School was founded in 1902. An 80-year-old settler named Solomon Everidge helped raise money for the school. He even gave 2 acres of his own land for it. In its first year, the school had 162 students!
The schoolhouse faced tough times, burning down three times in its first ten years. But each time, the community worked to rebuild it, showing their strong spirit.
The Pack Horse Library
In 1935, Hindman was part of a special program called the Pack Horse Library Project. This project helped bring books to people in remote areas by delivering them on horseback. It was a unique way to share knowledge and stories with everyone.
The 2022 Flood
On July 28, 2022, a very serious flood hit Eastern Kentucky. Hindman was one of the towns most affected. Many people lost their lives, and 22 of them were in Knott County. The mayor at the time said it was the worst flooding he had ever seen. Search and rescue teams worked for days to help everyone.
