The Vice-President of the Republic of Mauritius (in French, Vice-Président de la République de Maurice) is an important leader in the country. This person holds the second-highest position, right after the President. Mauritius is a parliamentary republic, which means the Vice-President's job is mostly to represent the country. The National Assembly, which is like the country's parliament, chooses the Vice-President. This is all explained in the Constitution of Mauritius, which is the main set of rules for the country.
What Does the Vice-President Do?
The Vice-President has a very important role. If the President cannot do their job because they have passed away, resigned, or been removed from office, the Vice-President steps in. They become the acting President.
However, the Vice-President does not automatically become the new President permanently. If the President leaves office, the Vice-President can be suggested by the parliament to take over. If they are chosen by the parliament, they will then start a new five-year term as President.
