The Vice President of the State of Palestine (Arabic: نائب رئيس دولة فلسطين, romanized: Nayib Raʼīs Dawlat Filasṭīn) is a very important job. This person is the second-highest leader in the Palestinian government, right after the President. Think of it like a team: the President is the captain, and the Vice President is the co-captain. If something happens to the President, the Vice President steps in to lead. This makes sure the government always has a leader.

Understanding the Vice President's Role
The Vice President helps the President run the country. They are part of the executive branch, which is the part of the government that carries out laws and manages daily affairs. The Vice President's main job is to support the President and be ready to take over if needed. This role is similar to how vice presidents work in many other countries around the world.
How the Vice President is Chosen
The President of Palestine chooses the Vice President. This choice is made from a special group called the Executive Committee. First, the chairman of this committee suggests a person. Then, the other members of the committee must agree. Once approved, the President officially appoints the Vice President. The President can also give the Vice President specific tasks, or even ask them to step down if necessary.
The First Vice President of Palestine
The position of Vice President was created recently, on April 24, 2025. This happened during a meeting of the Palestinian Central Council. Most of the members, 170 of them, voted to create this new role. Just two days later, on April 26, 2025, the first Vice President was chosen. Hussein al-Sheikh was assigned this important position. He was already a well-known leader, serving as the secretary of the Executive Committee.
