The Vice President of Suriname (which is Vicepresident van de Republiek Suriname in Dutch) is the second most important political job in Suriname. It comes right after the President. Both the President and the Vice President are chosen by the National Assembly. They serve for five years.
This important role was created in 1987. Before that, Suriname had a Prime Minister. The Vice President helps manage the government's daily work. They report to the President.
Ronnie Brunswijk is the current Vice President of Suriname. He took office on July 16, 2020. He was chosen on July 13, 2020, without anyone running against him. His inauguration happened in Paramaribo at the Onafhankelijkheidsplein. The ceremony was private because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
