Jules Albert Wijdenbosch (born May 2, 1941 – died April 30, 2025) was an important politician from Suriname. He served as the country's President from 1996 to 2000. Before becoming president, he held other significant roles, including Prime Minister and Vice President. He was a member of the National Democratic Party. A famous bridge in Suriname, the Jules Wijdenbosch Bridge, is named after him.

Jules Wijdenbosch had a long career in Surinamese politics. He held several top positions in the government.
Early Roles in Government
He started as the Deputy Prime Minister in 1986. This role helps the Prime Minister lead the country. From April 1987 to January 1988, he served as the Prime Minister. The Prime Minister is the head of the government.
Becoming Vice President
Later, in January 1991, he became the Vice President. He held this position until September 1991. The Vice President often supports the President and can take over if needed.
Serving as President
Jules Wijdenbosch became the President in September 1996. He was the seventh president of Suriname. He led the country until August 2000. The President is the head of state and leads the entire country.
Political Parties
He was a key member of the National Democratic Party. This party was very powerful in Suriname during the 1980s. After 2000, he also led a group called the Democratic National Platform 2000.
His Legacy
The Jules Wijdenbosch Bridge is a well-known landmark in Suriname. It connects the eastern part of the country with the capital city, Paramaribo. Naming this bridge after him shows his importance to the country.
Death
Jules Wijdenbosch passed away in Paramaribo on April 30, 2025. He died just two days before his 84th birthday. The current President of Suriname, Chan Santokhi, announced his death. President Santokhi also shared that there would be a special state funeral for the former president.
