Early Life and Education
Jules Wijdenbosch was born in Paramaribo, Suriname, on May 2, 1941. When he was younger, he was a leader for trade unions and youth groups. He also worked as a customs officer at a port. He later went to the University of Amsterdam to study political science and public administration. These subjects helped him understand how governments work.
In 1975, he wrote a small book called Schets Surinaamse Republiek Eigen Stijl. In this book, he shared his ideas for how the government of Suriname could be set up. He suggested having many councils and giving the president a lot of power.
Rising in Politics
Jules Wijdenbosch was a member of the National Democratic Party. This party was very powerful in Suriname during the 1980s.
He held several important positions in the government:
- From February 13, 1987, he was the Prime Minister of Suriname. At the same time, he was also in charge of Home Affairs, Justice, and Foreign Affairs. He served as Prime Minister until January 26, 1988.
- After that, he became the Vice President of Suriname in January 1991. He held this role until September 1991.
Becoming President

One big project completed during his presidency was the building of a large bridge over the Suriname River. This bridge was later named the Jules Wijdenbosch Bridge in his honor.
