Ronald Runaldo Venetiaan, born on June 18, 1936, is a former politician from Suriname. He served as the country's president two times. He was the sixth president and later the eighth president of Suriname.

About Ronald Venetiaan
Ronald Venetiaan was born in Paramaribo, the capital city of Suriname. In 1955, he traveled from Suriname to the University of Leiden in the Netherlands. There, he studied mathematics and physics.
Early Career and Education
After finishing his studies in 1964, he earned his "doctorandus" degree. He then returned to Suriname. He became a teacher of mathematics and physics.
Entering Politics
In 1973, Mr. Venetiaan became the Minister of Education. He was part of the government led by Henck Arron and represented the National Party of Suriname (NPS). However, in 1980, there was a military takeover in Suriname. This event caused him to lose his position. After that, he decided to teach at the Anton de Kom University.
Return to Public Service
In 1987, Ronald Venetiaan returned to politics. He became the Chairman of the National Party of Suriname. At the same time, he also served again as the Minister of Education.
Becoming President
His first time as president was from 1991 to 1996. After this term, he lost the next election to Jules Wijdenbosch. But in 2000, he ran for president again. He won back his position with the support of the New Front political group. He received a large majority of votes in the Parliament.
In 2005, he was elected again for a third term as president. He officially started this term on August 12, 2005. Mr. Venetiaan stepped down as the Chairman of the NPS in 2012. Gregory Rusland took over this role. Ronald Venetiaan then retired from politics in 2013. He believed it was time for younger leaders to take charge.
Personal Life and Interests
Besides his work in politics, Ronald Venetiaan is also a mathematician. His last name, Venetiaan, means "Venetian" in Dutch. This refers to someone from the city of Venice in Italy.
Writing and Poetry
Mr. Venetiaan also has a creative side. He published his first poems under the pen name "Vene" in a magazine called Mamio in 1962. Many of his other writings were not published in books. Instead, they were performed in theatre plays. He also used another pen name, Krumanty. In 2020, he worked with Chan Santokhi on a book titled We gaan Suriname redden (which means "We are going to save Suriname").
Ronald Venetiaan is married to Liesbeth Venetiaan-Vanenburg. They have four children: three daughters and one son.
