The Vicente's poison frog (Oophaga vicentei) is a small, colorful frog. It belongs to the Dendrobatidae family, which is known for its brightly colored poison dart frogs. This frog lives only in central Panama, specifically in the Veraguas and Coclé Provinces.

This special frog spends its life in trees. It lives in warm, wet tropical forests, both in lowlands and on mountains. It is not very well known, so scientists are still learning about it.

Life Cycle and Reproduction

Vicente's poison frogs have a unique way of raising their young. They lay their eggs in plants that grow on trees. These plants are often bromeliads, which collect small pools of water.

How Tadpoles Grow

Once the eggs hatch, the parent frogs move the tiny tadpoles. They carry them to these small water pools found in the bromeliads. The tadpoles then grow and develop in these safe, watery spots.

Special Feeding for Young Frogs

The name Oophaga means "egg-eater." This is because the mother frog does something very special. She lays unfertilized eggs just for her tadpoles to eat. These "nutritive eggs" give the growing tadpoles all the food they need to become young frogs. This unique feeding method helps the tadpoles survive in their small, isolated water pools.

Where Do They Live?

Vicente's poison frog is found only in a specific part of Panama. It lives in the central provinces of Veraguas and Coclé. These areas have the right kind of humid tropical forests that the frogs need to thrive.
