Vicente Pío was born in Madrid, Spain, on July 22, 1801. His father was Vicente Isabel Osorio de Moscoso y Álvarez de Toledo. He was the 12th Count of Altamira and held many other titles. His mother was María del Carmen Ponce de León y Carvajal. She was the 5th Duchess of Montemar.
Vicente Pío's family became very wealthy and powerful. They inherited many of the most important noble titles in Spain. This happened because other noble families died out without children.
His Younger Years
From a young age, Vicente Pío joined the court as a page. This meant he served the royal family. He lost his mother when he was just 12 years old.
In 1821, when he was 20, he got married. He married María Luisa Carvajal y Queralt. She was the daughter of José Miguel de Carvajal, 2nd Duke of San Carlos. Their wedding took place in the Bordeaux Cathedral.
Vicente Pío's father was a moderate liberal. He had worked for King Ferdinand VII in the royal household. Because of his political views, his father lost his position in 1823. Even though Vicente Pío tried many times, the king never gave his father his job back. When his father passed away in 1837, Vicente Pío inherited all his many noble titles.
His Later Life
In 1842, a new law in Spain changed things for noble families. This law, called the Law of Confiscation of Mayorazgos, meant nobles lost control of their large estates. Vicente Pío had to sell or mortgage much of his land.
His wife passed away in 1843. After this, he became close to Queen Isabella II. His oldest son, José María, married into the royal family in 1847. He married Infanta Luisa Teresa, who was a princess.
In 1843, Vicente Pío became a Senator for the Province of León. A senator is like a member of parliament. In 1845, he became a Senator for life. From 1849 to 1850, he was the vice-president of the Spanish Senate.
Queen Isabella II gave him important roles in her court. In 1854, she made him her senior groom. Two years later, he became her sommelier of corps. This meant he was in charge of the Royal Chamber. It showed that the queen trusted him a lot. He held this important position until he passed away.
