Vicente de Espona (born March 24, 1918 – died October 23, 1995) was a talented artist from Spain. He was known for his beautiful paintings and sculptures. Vicente was born in Valencia, Spain. However, he created most of his amazing artwork in other places. These included São Paulo, Brazil, and the Spanish cities of Marbella and San Pedro de Alcántara. You can still see many of his public art pieces in these cities today!
Before becoming a full-time artist, Vicente de Espona worked as a lawyer in Barcelona. But in 1950, he decided to follow his passion for art. He took a break from his law job and moved to Brazil. There, he spent his life creating art.

Art in São Paulo, Brazil
Vicente de Espona lived in São Paulo, Brazil, from 1957 to 1968. During these years, he created many paintings, sculptures, and engravings. He held two art shows every year in different Brazilian cities. His art studio in São Paulo was even opened for people to visit!
While in Brazil, Vicente also worked on other creative projects. He helped international advertising companies and drew pictures for books and magazine covers. One of his special projects was for a large summer home near Igapó lake. This home was called a "Spiritual Retreat." For this project, he made a huge stone mural. It was 125 square meters in size and was placed at the entrance of Londrina.
Art in Marbella, Spain
From 1971 until his passing in 1995, Vicente de Espona worked in Marbella, Spain. Many of his public art pieces are placed in the city's streets and squares.
- He created a special wooden and bronze throne for a religious group in Marbella.
- He made a sculptural mural for the House of Culture of Marbella. This piece was called Marbella Sun.
- He also created the Andalusia Memorial. Its main tall stone pillar stands about 6 feet high.
- Other works include a mural on the front of the Parish of Nueva Andalucía building.
- He also made a six-meter-tall mural at the Gimnasio Atenas, called Auto Modelación.
Art in San Pedro de Alcántara, Spain
Vicente de Espona created two important sculptures in the Málaga area of Spain.
Síntesis Sculpture
One of his sculptures is called Síntesis (which means synthesis). It is very tall, measuring 12 meters high! This artwork is located in San Pedro de Alcántara. Síntesis represents the town's patron saint, San Pedro de Alcántara.
- It was first placed in the church plaza.
- In the early 1990s, it was moved to the side of the main road.
- In 2008, it was taken down because it was a danger to road workers. It was left alone for two years.
- But in 2010, it was fixed up, repainted, and repaired! It was then placed in a roundabout called Teodoro García Díez. This is near Ronda Road and the industrial area. It now welcomes visitors coming to San Pedro.
Return of the Olivar Sculpture
Another sculpture by Vicente de Espona is called Return of the Olivar. This piece is in Malaga. It shows a family, with one person riding a donkey. It is much smaller than Síntesis. You can find it in the gardens of the famous palm grove in San Pedro de Alcántara. This sculpture was also in bad shape for some years. But in 2008, it was finally repaired and restored.
